We are actively seeking an Assistant Vice President for Data Strategy and Governance (AVP-DSG) to pioneer and execute innovative strategies aimed at governing and securing research and administrative data across the university.

Key Responsibilities

The AVP-DSG will be instrumental in crafting a data governance framework that ensures the ethical management and utilization of both research and administrative data. This role will involve substantial collaboration with internal stakeholders including IT security from our Office of Information Technology (OIT) and Duke Health Technology Services (DHTS). This strategic position not only focuses on internal policy development but also involves engagement with external agencies, enhancing Duke's leadership in data handling and security.

Role Expectations

This role demands a proactive leader ready to guide a team focused on enhancing research capabilities while adhering to stringent security standards like the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC). Communication, collaboration, and continuous learning are key attributes for the AVP-DSG as they will interact with a wide spectrum of the Duke community and beyond to foster a secure, accountable use of data.

Work Performed

The successful candidate will manage a wide range of duties including but not limited to:

  • Development and implementation of institutional data governance frameworks.
  • Regular assessment of compliance obligations affecting research data management.
  • Direction and innovation in university-wide research data policies in accordance with external requirements.
  • Provision of expert advice and communication pertinent to research data security.
  • Engagement with federal and industry partners concerning funding and data usage agreements.

Qualifications

Prospective candidates should hold at least a bachelor's degree coupled with ten years of relevant experience in data governance or related fields. A master’s degree and professional certifications like CRA, CIA, or CPA are preferred. Essential skills include excellent leadership, communication, and a robust understanding of the regulatory landscape affecting research data.
