About Auror

At Auror, we're championing the retail industry by combating theft and Organized Retail Crime, a global issue that costs up to $100 billion. This high volume crime is increasingly organized and poses daily risks to people, retailers, and communities.

We were founded in New Zealand, and we're cooperating with some of the world's finest and largest retailers in Australasia, North America, and the UK.

Auror's mission is to connect people with intelligence to reduce crime. We've cultivated a high-performing, positive culture, giving great importance to creating an inclusive environment for a diverse team. If you are passionate about reducing crime and creating safer communities for everyone, then we'd love you to join our team.

About Auror Engineering

Collaboration lies at the core of the Engineering team at Auror. We hold firm to the belief that the best software can only result from working together and seeking different perspectives to solve problems. We have just commenced our journey to unlock the value in the data we gather, aiming to connect the dots between incidents and work proactively towards preventing crime in real time. We receive tens of thousands of incidents from retailers globally each day - these include plain text reports, images, and CCTV footage - which need to be matched, aggregated, and reported back to our customers and law enforcement.

About The Role

We are looking for a Data Engineer who is excited to work with a modern data platform as part of our Data Engineering team. The team is a subset of the wider Data and AI team, based around the world. However, our core team is located in Auckland, New Zealand, where this role is also based.

Our Data Engineers typically work on data pipelines and transformations - moving data from core data stores to our data warehouse, and converting it into concise, clean, useful views. We have numerous data sources, such as: a relational (Azure SQL) database of retail crime reports, high frequency detections of vehicles from automated license plate recognition (ALPR) cameras (stored in CosmosDB), and high frequency click-events from user interaction with our platform (stored in Azure Table Storage). Our team uses tools such as DBT, FiveTran, Airflow, and Azure Data Factory to move data within our platform, usually landing it in our data warehouse (Snowflake) before it is consumed by our platform and customers. We also utilize tools like python and Snowpark for data transformation.

Given the diversity of your role, you'll gain experience across our entire data platform. Initially, we'd expect you to focus on getting familiar with our core data systems, before progressing to development of new data pipelines and transformations.

What you will work on:

  • Collaboratively work with the wider Auror team to create robust data models for various applications.
  • Create scalable data pipelines using infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD.
  • Foster continuous improvement of our core systems with a focus on data quality and observability.
  • Collaborate within an agile environment in a supportive team.

You’ll be reporting to Nickolas Morton, Lead Data Engineer

I joined Auror because I wanted to contribute to work that matters. I currently sit within the data team, mostly working with our data warehouse and its use within the company. My university studies focused on complex network theory, which led me into data science. It quickly became apparent that to deliver reliable, production-ready insights, the data platform needed to be solid. This realization sparked my transition into data engineering, now my passion. I enjoy collaborating with people who are engaged in what they do and are eager to experiment and improve. Check out my LinkedIn
