Project Description:

Join us at the multi-stakeholder initiative INFORM, developed to enhance open-source, quantitative analysis aiding in climate adaptation and disaster preparedness. The Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission is leading the technical and scientific advancements, crafting a system for better risk management methodologies in diverse disaster scenarios.

The ideal candidate will be a part of the INFORM development team at JRC, focusing on the groundbreaking INFORM Warning project. This role is aimed at integrating scientific methodologies with system development to produce multi-hazard early warning systems that serve the humanitarian sector efficiently.

Duties and Responsibilities:

This position offers the opportunity to play a crucial role in advancing the INFORM Warning initiative. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing innovative early warning risk models assessing implications of compound and cascading hazards.
  • Liaising at strategic levels on methodological and technical advancements.
  • Utilizing cutting-edge technology like Python, machine learning, and deep learning to create impactful solutions.
  • Consolidating diverse data sources focusing on humanitarian and climatic analytics.
  • Generating actionable insights through sophisticated data visualization tools.
  • Preparing detailed reports and technical documentation for stakeholders.

Required Skills and Experience:

Candidates should have a master’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Environmental Engineering, or related fields, with a minimum of five years relevant experience in data science roles. Proficiency in Python and familiarity with machine learning libraries are essential. Experience in geographic data tools and exceptional analytical skills are highly valuable.

Institutional Arrangement:

The position is supported by CRAF’d and ECHO (European Commission), and will be located at the JRC in Ispra, Italy. UNDP, as the project leader for INFORM Warning, will officially contract the position.
