The Role
We are seeking a Reporting Principal Engineer to join our Big Data reporting team. This individual will assist with developing sophisticated and efficient solutions tailored to real business challenges, guide the design and implementation of these solutions in code, offer training on coding, testing, and performance analysis techniques, and also review code. They will often participate in scrum team events (especially refinements) and assist product owners in understanding technical challenges. Production issues will typically be escalated to the Principal Engineer for triage before being added to a team's backlog. Principal Engineers are also responsible for staying abreast of the latest technologies and promoting their adoption.
The Team
Our Big Data reporting team includes twelve members with varied backgrounds and skills in a range of areas, such as Databricks/ Delta lake/ SQL Server/ Azure Data Warehouse/ SSRS/ SSIS.
Responsibilities
- Take the lead in team enablement initiatives;
- Execute the plan by motivating team members and closely collaborating to achieve it;
- Deconstruct the tasks and guide reporting engineers through gaps to sound technical solutions;
- Share expertise and knowledge. Showcase practices, innovations, and inventions both inside and outside of the organization;
- Collaborate with management to identify potential talent;
- Coach engineers to help them progress in their careers;
- Establish cross-organization engineering best practice standards and guidelines. Create a culture where contribution patterns and quality are paramount. Work closely with teams to implement them.
Requirements
Must have:
- 8+ years of hands-on experience creating complex, highly optimized SQL code for data manipulation and reporting;
- 5+ years of experience with ETL/ELT, Data Modeling, Data Warehouse Architecture, and Reporting tools;
- Knowledge of Data Governance;
- A team player, analytical thinker and problem solver, capable of self-organization;
- Quick learner - able to quickly grasp business information, team dynamics, infrastructure, and technologies used.
Nice to have:
- A bachelor's degree in a quantitative/technical field (e.g. Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering) or equivalent industry experience;
- Experience with Microsoft BI stack (SQL Server, SSRS, SSAS);
- Experience with Azure Data platforms like Synapse Analytics, Data Lake, Databricks;
- Experience with programming languages, preferably Python or Scala;
- Experience with CI/CD;
- Experience working in an Agile team environment.
