At the CERT Cyber Mission Readness (CMR) directorate, we are committed to strengthening cybersecurity defenses in the U.S. and with our global partners. We engage in creating sophisticated cyber exercises, developing open-source tools, and running educational contests to improve cybersecurity response capabilities. Our focus is on identifying and mitigating threats posed by advanced cyber adversaries. Situated within the CMR directorate is the Operational Readiness and Evaluation (ORE) team, an epicenter of innovation focused on enhancing the cyber workforce's readiness through cutting-edge simulations and training solutions.

Role Overview: Senior Data Engineer

In your role as a Senior Data Engineer, you will be at the forefront of developing and maintaining advanced data architectures and analytics frameworks. Your expertise will support crucial analysis and operational missions, working directly with Mission Partners to bolster their data engineering capabilities. This role is vital in evolving new work roles and devising training programs tailored for enhancing data competencies within government partnerships.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement robust data pipelines and architectures.
  • Ensure the management of data lifecycle, including modeling and database architecture.
  • Optimize ETL (extract, transform, load) processes and implement data science and machine learning solutions.
  • Collaborate with Mission Partners to refine data engineering practices.
  • Develop role-specific training and simulation programs to boost skill sets.
  • Uphold stringent cybersecurity policies relevant to data systems.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a BS in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related fields, plus ten years’ experience; OR an MS and eight years’ experience; OR a PhD and five years’ experience.
  • Willingness to undertake up to 25% travel, including international trips, to support SEI's mission.
  • Eligibility for Department of Defense security clearance.

Desirable Skills:

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, and SQL.
  • Experience with data management tools like Elasticsearch, Apache NiFi, Kafka, and Logstash.
  • Knowledge of data science and machine learning, and familiarity with Big Data platforms such as Jupyter Lab and ROCK NSM.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of effective team collaboration and partnership engagement.
  • Prior experience in government or military IT roles, focused on cybersecurity and large-scale data management is a plus.
  • Experience in educational roles, especially in data-focused training and curriculum development.
