Job Description

Primary Function:

As a Systems Analyst (Robotic Algorithms and Controls Engineer) at Intuitive, you will play a crucial role in creating the safest, highest quality robotic system for minimally invasive surgery through rigorous and robust technical analysis. Your responsibilities will include developing algorithms and controls to support new instrument development for the da Vinci Surgical System.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage tele-operated motion performance for robotic surgical instruments, ensuring optimal motion fidelity.
  • Collaborate with the clinical development team to understand and meet performance requirements.
  • Work closely with the mechanical design team to refine mechanisms for enhanced motion fidelity.
  • Conduct investigations and experiments to gain a deep understanding of the instrument mechanism's behavior and limitations.
  • Modify and fine-tune algorithms to ensure consistent performance in clinical environments.
  • Implement features and algorithms for new instrument development, including collaboration on prototypes and performance assessments.
  • Perform risk analysis and develop safety algorithms, including thorough documentation for regulatory approval processes.
  • Review field data to continuously enhance the performance and stability of surgical instruments.
  • Collaborate with the manufacturing team to create automated fixtures for instrument calibration, testing, and assembly.
  • Establish manufacturing test specifications to ensure instrument performance.
  • Provide a top-level view of projects, acting as an interface between technical specialties and taking ownership of interdisciplinary issues.

Qualifications/Job Requirements:

  • Minimum PhD with 4+ years (preferred) or MS with 6+ years of experience in a robotics-related field.
  • Intuitive understanding of mechanical phenomena with the ability to conduct rigorous analysis.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ and MATLAB programming, as well as hardware, software, and mechanism integration skills. Python and basic SQL knowledge are a plus.
  • Knowledge of classical and modern servo control systems and serial-arm robot kinematics.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis is advantageous.
  • Understanding of electrical and mechanical design principles and CAD tools is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in launching commercially successful products is advantageous.
  • Ability to work independently and the determination to solve challenging problems.
