Overview:

At the forefront of scientific research, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for the role of Applied Data Scientist within the Advanced Detection and Applied Data Science (ADADS) group. This team is a part of the Physics Division’s Nuclear Structure & Advanced Technologies Section, pushing the boundaries of multi-modal detector systems, instrumentation, and advanced analytical techniques.

What You Will Do:

You will undertake cutting-edge research and development projects that involve applying advanced data science and machine learning methodologies. These projects will focus on enhancing nuclear material detection, identification, and localization in support of national security missions. The role involves collaborative teamwork and developing innovative research proposals, and aligning with ORNL's core values to drive impactful scientific advancements.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate extensively within the ADADS group and across ORNL to apply modern data science techniques.
  • Enhance methodological frameworks and algorithms to improve measurement efficiency and precision.
  • Document and publish research findings in high-impact journals and conferences.
  • Contribute to project teams and proposal development efforts.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related field.
  • At least 2 years of postdoctoral research or professional laboratory experience in data science or data analytics.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Eligibility for DOE clearance.
  • Experience with advanced programming languages such as C, C++, Python, Julia, or R, and familiarity with machine learning libraries like TensorFlow or OpenCV.
  • Proven ability to apply data science techniques to tangible, real-world data problems.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
