We're on the hunt for a data engineer to join the Ookla Data Engineering team and aid in handling the world's premier collection of data on mobile and fixed internet performance. As a data engineer, your focus will be the development of tools, libraries, and operations to support data scientists and analysts as they uncover innovative ways to utilize our data. Applicants should have a robust, data-driven programming background and a passion for precision and performance. You'll be working with big data using the latest technologies. Expectations for Success: - Develop high volume data processing jobs across various platforms including Redshift, Athena, Iceberg, Spark and Airflow - Work closely with Data Scientists to turn theory and methodology into viable products - Identify bottlenecks in system performance and suggest ways to increase process efficiency - Support and collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and product managers Requirements: We're looking for the right individual, not an exact list of requirements. If you believe your life experiences have equipped you to handle similar challenges, we'd like to hear from you. - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent experience - Strong understanding of programming concepts with experience in at least 1 OOP language (Python, Scala, Java) - Solid background and 3+ years of direct experience working with Python - Experience with high volume distributed data processing in Spark - Strong knowledge of SQL, databases (MySQL / Redshift / Athena / Trino), data modeling, and modern data warehouse (lakehouse) management - Excellent troubleshooting and analysis skills - Excitement to learn and work with new technologies in a dynamic environment - Strong communication skills both in person and via virtual mediums - Strong time management skills and a self-driven work ethic - AWS cloud services experience is a plus - Experience with event driven architecture and streaming data pipelines is a plus Benefits: We deeply care about each other and our work, and our benefits are just one way we show it.
