Postdoctoral Appointee – Portability and AI at Scale

Join Argonne’s Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) as we deploy one of the largest computing resources globally, the Aurora exascale supercomputer. Collaborate with world-class scientists and industry experts across various domains, preparing scientific applications and AI frameworks to harness this groundbreaking resource for scientific discovery. Aurora will facilitate the training of Large Language Models (LLMs) for scientific applications.

ALCF is a pioneer in training the next generation of scientists in supercomputing to advance their research. We are seeking a Postdoctoral appointee to engage in multiple projects focusing on performance portability, AI, and large-scale simulation.

Job Responsibilities

As a Postdoc at ALCF, you will:

• Collaborate with scientists from multiple domains to achieve their research goals on Aurora through innovation and teamwork.
• Engage in cutting-edge research in AI (LLMs, foundation models), performance optimization, portable programming, differentiable programming, and more.
• Contribute significantly to our training program, ensuring users excel in utilizing the supercomputer.

Position Requirements

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Ph.D. (completed within the last 0-5 years) in applied mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, or related fields.
• Experience contributing to scientific software in C++, Python, or comparable languages.
• Proven collaborative skills, including the ability to work effectively with other scientists, divisions, laboratories, and universities.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills at all organization levels.
• Ability to model Argonne’s core values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience with parallel algorithms using frameworks like OpenMP, CUDA, Kokkos, SYCL, or similar.
• Proven experience running applications at scale (>50 computing nodes), whether it be AI training, simulation, or data analytics.
