Job Description About the Role The research team at Verisk EES (Extreme Event Solutions) is working on cutting-edge research in AI for climate risk. We are seeking exceptionally talented and motivated candidates passionate about undertaking industrial R&D, building, and deploying AI and ML solutions for real-world problems. You will play an integral role in broadening our model capabilities to improve our understanding and predictions of climate extremes and enhance the risk view we provide to our clients. In this role, you will be tasked with building, deploying, and validating machine learning algorithms to solve real-world climate issues, initially focusing on atmospheric-perils modeling. This role offers the perfect blend between machine learning and climate science, providing many opportunities to utilize your technical skills and inventive mindset. About the Day-to-Day Responsibilities of the Role Design, build, deploy, and maintain machine learning models to achieve the research and business objectives of the Research department. Collaborate with and assist other research groups in developing new machine learning tools and improving existing models. Evaluate model performance using real-world data and present your findings to key decision makers. Identify suitable data sources and process, clean, and verify the integrity of data used for analysis. Qualifications Ph.D. degree (completed or about to be completed) in engineering, fluid mechanics, atmospheric science, computer science, statistics, or a related field. 2+ years of experience building machine learning models in industry or academia. Solid theoretical understanding of the physical processes governing climate phenomena and fluid dynamics (turbulence, convection, closure models, etc.) Publications in pertinent top-tier journals / conferences are preferred. Robust command of machine learning algorithms for spatiotemporal data and physical processes (LSTM, TCN, CNN, Transformers, PINNs, Neural Operators, etc.) Experience with Generative models (GANS, Diffusion models) is advantageous. Familiarity with common data science toolkits like scikit-learn, PyTorch, or TensorFlow. Comfortable deploying machine learning models in a HPC environment. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to convey technical ideas to a non-technical audience. Team-focused and a history of supporting project team members.
