Climate Data Analysis Manager

Join Ember, an independent, not-for-profit energy think tank, as we recruit a Data Analyst with Project Management and superb communication skills to analyze methane emissions from the coal sector and their linkage to global steel supply chains.

With a strong reputation in Australia for policy and data analysis on coal mine methane, we're looking for someone experienced in ESG or net-zero implementation—particularly within the industry. This position will empower you to work on a critical project aimed at reducing global heating and enhancing awareness of methane emissions in the climate and energy sector.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage an 18-month project analyzing data, including satellite data, on emissions from Australia’s mines and linking this to international steel supply chains.
• Collaborate with satellite analysts and other data experts to interpret data and illustrate the national and global significance of coal mine methane.
• Build and maintain a network of partners and collaborators within the steel industry.
• Work closely with our communications team to create attention-grabbing publications and reports.
• Develop strategies to prioritize coal mine methane within the steel industry.
• Partner with our Australia Climate Strategy Advisor to integrate this research into broader Australia and Asia coal mine methane initiatives.

Location

Australia (fully remote). Occasional travel may be required.

Requirements

Must Have:

• Demonstrable experience managing complex projects.
• Ability to research and curate emissions (or equivalent) data sets.
• Excellent written communication skills and experience in writing reports or publications.
• Ability to communicate complex messages clearly and succinctly.
• Minimum of five (5) years of relevant senior research experience at a think tank/NGO or in ESG within the private sector (background in the mining industry is a plus).
• Passion for working in the climate and energy sector and a strong understanding of policy influences.
• Independence and effectiveness in spoken and written English.
• Passion for reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.
• Comfortable working remotely with a diverse team across different time zones.

Nice to Have:

• Fascination with data and data visualization.
• Knowledge of methane, the coal sector, or steel industry background.
• Experience in climate advocacy.
• Experience engaging with government officials or industry representatives.

Benefits

Salary: 78,246 AUD with potential progression to 101,406 AUD plus 11% superannuation.

Contract: Full time (9 days every fortnight with no pay reduction), permanent subject to a 3-month probationary period.
