The energy industry is undergoing its largest transformation since industrialization, changing at an unparalleled pace, and we are positioning ourselves to be at the heart of this change. Our objective is to be the leading global provider of solutions that enable customers to release £30bn of value per annum from distributed energy resources (DERs). We are developing a Software as a Service (SaaS) subscription business with a global market potential of £2.4 billion per annum, by digitally connecting hundreds of thousands of DERs with energy markets. We have already achieved a market-leading position and KrakenFlex is a recognized thought leader and innovator in the industry. Our efforts have not gone unnoticed and we are pleased to announce that we now have the full support and backing of Octopus Energy, an award-winning UK energy supplier who shares our passion and values. We're seeking a research-focused, flexible data scientist to join our team in developing the next generation of distributed energy management technologies. At Kraken NeXt, we tackle impossible problems and test unreasonable hypotheses, drawing from academic literature, emerging technologies, and the ideas of our talented employees. As a part of NeXt, you'll join a fast-paced environment where we build tangible things to test and demonstrate these ideas, and help stimulate the rest of the organizations' creativity to discover new ways of seeing existing problems. You should be good at thinking on your feet and exploring a problem area alongside colleagues in a highly collaborative manner. We're looking for someone who can make ruthless assumptions to get something real built and applied to the real world, but won't overlook significant hints that we're heading in the wrong direction. We will give you the freedom and flexibility to be creative, as you would find in an academic setting, combined with the resources and structure to guarantee and steer your success. Your duties will include working in a fast-paced environment handling diverse R+D needs covering big data and AI, product design, and social sciences. You'll gather and process data from a variety of sources to test hypotheses, work with other team members building visualizations and proof-of-concept solutions, research and explore problems to define them and create sensible, testable approaches. Staying current with literature in the distributed energy field, defining data science best practices and cooperating with colleagues to share knowledge, enhance skills, and provide feedback will also be required. You will need the ability to process and draw meaningful insights and information from data, a 'Data science stack' experience. Strong numerical skills, a knack for data, experience with machine learning, statistics, and analytical techniques, experience in a research role, academically or in industry, proven ability to build software solutions are crucial. An interest in data storytelling, a desire to explain and craft a clear message from findings, a willingness to work outside your immediate area and skillset, and awareness of software engineering techniques to ensure your work is maintainable, interoperable, and correct are also required. Our ideal candidate will be based in the Greater Manchester area and willing to come into the office a couple of days per week. But we appreciate the need for flexibility, so if you'd prefer to work remotely, let us know. If this sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you. It's important to us that we find the right fit, so please apply even if you don't meet every requirement. We value the unique skills and perspectives that each person brings to our team. We are an equal opportunity employer that doesn't discriminate on any protected attribute. Our commitment is to provide equal opportunities, an inclusive work environment, and fairness for everyone.
