Role Overview:

As a Lead Data Scientist at Upwork, you will be at the forefront of analyzing and deriving value from deep data insights. This role involves:

• Developing machine learning algorithms and statistical models to support decision-making processes.
• Improving user experiences, optimizing operations, and driving profitable growth on the platform.
• Creating impactful data models focusing on customer value across various teams including marketing, product management, and engineering.
• Applying your expertise in SQL and Python to manipulate data and build predictive models.
• Leading initiatives to deploy model prototypes into production, significantly enhancing product and marketing strategies.

Your Impact:

• Analyze complex data from a global double-sided marketplace to influence product strategy.
• Become a subject matter expert in customer value, using analytics to provide actionable insights into the customer journey.
• Collaboratively work across teams to integrate data science into broader analytics, product and marketing efforts.
• Mentor team members and promote advanced data science and analytical techniques.

Why You’re the Perfect Fit:

• You have a proven track record of driving data product creation through a complete lifecycle, from data pipeline construction to machine learning deployment.
• You're deeply committed to and skilled in data exploration with strong SQL and Python proficiency.
• You have experience with business intelligence tools like Looker or Tableau and are proficient in experimenting with data (A/B testing).
• Past roles in marketplace or ecommerce settings are a plus, as is experience in building models for user segmentation, fraud detection, and similar scenarios.
• You hold a degree in Math, Physics, Statistics, Economics, Computer Science, or a similar field, and bring at least 5 years of experience in data science or a related area.

Salary and Benefits:

The annual base salary range for this position in California and Washington is $177,750—$209,250 USD, depending on your skills and experience. This position is also eligible for an annual bonus plan, sales incentive plan, and long-term equity incentives.
