General Summary

The Duke Cancer Institute (DCI) cares for over 10,000 cancer patients nationwide and from overseas. As a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated comprehensive cancer center, DCI employs more than 300 researchers and physicians and 500 clinical staff. The institute boasts a state-of-the-art, 267,000 square-foot cancer center. Ranked among the top centers for cancer services since 1993 by US News & World Report, the DCI takes a streamlined multidisciplinary approach to cancer care.

Work Performed

As an Oncology Data Specialist, you will:

• Abstract diverse medical data from the EMR and code it according to standards set by ACoS, CoC, and NCCCR.
• Document medical history, diagnostic findings, cancer identification, treatment, patient information, and outcomes.
• Maintain a thorough understanding of medical terminologies, disease processes, and relevant coding guidelines (ICD-O, FORDS, AJCC, SEER).
• Develop coding policies, perform research to solve complex coding problems, and assist with special projects.
• Ensure data management adherence to state and national requirements and DCI Cancer Committee guidelines.

Other duties incidental to the work described herein may also be performed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

An Associate's Degree in CRM or CIM (preferred) is required for certifications obtained on or after 2015.

Experience

At least two years of experience working as a CTR in a Hospital or Central Tumor Registry is required. Five years of experience as a CTR is preferred.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

Certification as a Tumor Registrar (CTR) is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Proficient in Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards (FORDS), ICD-O Coding, AJCC TNM, Collaborative Staging, and SEER staging.
• Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented investigative/analytic skills, and good follow-through.
• Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
• Experience with Metriq Registry software, Windows-based software, and EPIC EMR.
