Your Role in Our Team

Operations Research Engineers at ExxonMobil function as internal consultants, designed to support improved decision-making by employing operations research methods like mathematical optimization and stochastic simulation. Collaborating in a team environment, they leverage their technical skills, project management abilities, and business domain knowledge to develop technological and analytics solutions with business units, influencing and improving key business decisions.

The primary focus is on solving business problems related to the supply chain and commercial functions, particularly for Fuels, Lubricants, and Chemical products. This role entails working with global, cross-functional stakeholders to understand and translate commercial and technical business challenges into mathematical problems, applying operations research methods to generate decision-support solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the scoping of business problems to identify the application of operations research methods.
  • Work with key stakeholders to translate data requirements into models representing systems and constraints.
  • Develop custom mathematical optimization and/or stochastic simulation models using techniques like linear programming, mixed-integer programming, system dynamics simulation, and/or discrete event simulation.
  • Drive cross-functional alignment to validate model solution quality.
  • Create documentation and conduct reviews with senior technical professionals to ensure the technical quality of the applications.
  • Manage project timelines, coordinate team members, and provide timely updates to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional, global teams—including business domain experts, product owners, decision science engineers, and IT—to design, develop, deploy, and sustain scalable operations research-based solutions.

About You

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Ability to break down general requirements and long-term deadlines into actionable, short-term work tasks—self-directing work and monitoring progress.
  • Experience in soliciting inputs from subject matter experts (SMEs) and engaging with cross-functional teams to drive results.
  • Strong analytical skills with over 2 years’ experience in applying operations research modeling methods (mathematical optimization and/or stochastic simulation) for commercial-grade quality solutions.
  • Competence in developing mathematical optimization models using languages such as AIMMS, GAMS, AMPL, Pyomo, GurobiPy, etc.
  • Experience in developing system dynamics simulation models using software like Stella Architect, VenSim, AnyLogic, etc.
  • Over 5 years’ experience in applying operations research modeling methods for commercial-grade solutions.
  • Curious mindset in understanding business problems and developing related solutions.
  • Ability to view complex subjects from both a high-level and detailed perspective, communicating effectively with various audiences.

Additional Skills

  • Familiarity with developing discrete event simulation models using software like Arena, Simio, etc.
  • Proficiency in Python, particularly for developing and deploying operations research solutions.
  • Experience with source code version control (Git).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
