Job Summary: Research Engineer - Metallic Processing
Our cutting-edge Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Filton, Bristol, presents a unique opportunity for an experienced Research Engineer specializing in metallic processing, joining, bonding, and welding. Your diverse engineering expertise will drive research and development activities spanning TRL1-6, shaping the future of aviation.
Key Responsibilities
- Engage with academic and industrial partners to overcome critical technical challenges in welding, bonding, joining, and metallic processing technologies.
- Collaborate with Work Stream Leaders and Project Managers to advance metallic manufacturing technologies' Technology Readiness Level (TRL).
- Manage budgets, projects, schedules, and risks, ensuring effective communication with stakeholders.
- Operate essential equipment such as mechanical test machines, microscopes, and metrology devices for experimentation and analysis.
- Document technical work and contribute to Technology Development Plans (TDPs) and Technology Business Cases (TBCs).
- Share your expertise in metallic manufacturing technologies with colleagues and stay updated on industry advancements.
- Enhance R&D practices, collaborating positively with other teams and functions.
- Maintain adherence to Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) policies and promote a proactive EH&S culture.
- Support GKN's core principles, promoting a safe, innovative, open, honest, caring, and respectful workplace culture.
Qualifications and Skills
Essential
- Degree-qualified in Engineering (Aerospace/Mechanical/HND equivalent or Degree Apprenticeship).
- Specialist knowledge in core metallic manufacturing technologies such as welding, forming, metal bonding, machining, or metallic additive manufacturing.
- Proven experience with experimental and analytical equipment for metallic processing.
- Track record of delivering improvements in research or technological environments with individual initiative.
- Comprehensive awareness of the product lifecycle, including design, materials, manufacturing, and end-of-life stages.
- Exceptional technical documentation skills.
Desirable
- Advanced degree (Masters, PhD, or EngD).
- Chartered Engineer status from a relevant institution.
- Experience in aerospace or manufacturing environments.
