Job Description: Senior Data Management Associate
Organizational Setting and Work Relationships
The Senior Data Management Associate is supervised by a professional staff member who provides general guidance and work plans. The incumbent works independently under the supervision's oversight and supervises support staff. Contracts are primarily with colleagues at the same duty station for information exchange and work plan discussions. External interactions include national and local authorities for data gathering and exchange.
All UNHCR staff members are accountable for performing duties as outlined in their job descriptions. This includes working within delegated authorities, adhering to the UN Charter, UN Staff Regulations and Rules, and UNHCR Policies and Administrative Instructions. Staff members must uphold UNHCR's core values of professionalism, integrity, and respect for diversity.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor regular data entry activities and verify the accuracy and relevance of data.
- Prepare regular database backups.
- Coordinate the transfer of refugee records among camps.
- Collect GIS data, update maps, and undertake field trips if necessary.
- Ensure accurate data entry related to asylum seekers, refugees, and persons of concern.
- Develop and run reports from operational databases, including ProGress, and assist in data analysis.
- Compile data and interpret statistics for various reports.
- Develop forms and tools for data collection and analysis.
- Identify knowledge and hardware gaps in data management operations.
- Resolve incidents and escalate issues to the supervisor if necessary.
- Support risk identification and management, ensuring decision-making is risk-based within the functional area.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Years of Experience / Degree Level: 4 years relevant experience with High School Diploma, or 2 years relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

Certificates and/or Licenses: Information Technology, Electronic Data Processing (essential).
Additional Qualifications
- Proficiency in MS Office, particularly Microsoft Excel.
- Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to translate complex data sets into actionable insights.
- Understanding of data modeling, quality, and lifecycle management.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Language Requirements
For General Service jobs: Knowledge of English and/or UN working language of the duty station if not English.
Desired Candidate Profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, Economics, Social Sciences, or a related field (Advanced degrees are a plus).
- Microsoft SQL Server (2005 or later) Certification.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Access.
- Completion of UNHCR learning programs or specified training relevant to the position's functions.
- Previous experience working with UN/UNHCR.
