Summary The Wikimedia Foundation's Community Growth team seeks to enhance knowledge equity by supporting their worldwide network of volunteers through grantmaking, capacity development, and building strategic partnerships. They are searching for a Senior Data Scientist, reporting to the Manager of Data, Learning & Evaluation (Community Growth), who will fortify the strategic endeavors of Community Growth with significant, accessible, and ethical data and insights. As a Senior Data Scientist, you will operate within a complex data environment to build vital, resilient data pipelines and self-service dashboards and reports. These will enable Community Growth teams and leaders to make data-driven decisions to refine and adapt their support of Wikimedia communities. Responsibilities: - In partnership with the DL&E Manager, design a data system for grantee activities and outcomes that facilitates standardization and connection with our primary data pipelines - Lead the creation and maintenance of internal data dashboards to track Community Growth programs' outcomes and impacts - Identify actionable insights from trends and themes across datasets to inform reports and decision-making about grantmaking, partnerships, and programmatic interventions - Design Community Growth data processes for maximum effectiveness, building data frames and connecting to pipelines for efficient storage and retrieval, basic aggregation and ETL - Collaborate across departments, including with technology data teams, to ensure that the calculation of metrics aligns with Foundation-level metric practices - Proactively identify requirements to support and improve an evolving data ecosystem Skills and Experience: - English fluency - Bachelor’s degree and five years related experience OR a Master’s degree and three years related experience; or equivalent advanced work experience in data analysis, data science, research and analytics or a related field - Demonstrable experience with programming languages, especially SQL and either R or Python - Experience with large-scale data processing & storage tools (we use Hadoop, Hive, Presto, and Spark) - Experience with data visualization and dashboarding tools like Apache Superset, Google Looker Studio, or similar tools - Familiarity with Google Suite Qualities that are important to us: - Ability to problem solve and select methods and techniques for quality and efficient solutions - Clear communication of findings and recommendations to colleagues of diverse backgrounds and expertise areas - Exposure to ethical data management and privacy practices - Ability to learn and apply new technologies and tools - Desire to learn, share knowledge, and assist other colleagues - Flexibility and openness to change and new information Additional Desired Qualifications: - Advanced statistical training and experience - Interest in Wikimedia projects, the free knowledge movement, global education and/or international development - Cross-cultural sensitivity and awareness - Experience with open-source tools - Fluency in languages other than English - Experience working in a Nonprofit, NGO or INGO About the Wikimedia Foundation: The Wikimedia Foundation operates Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia free knowledge projects. The annual salary range for this position for US applicants is $98,926 to $156,320. Salary is determined by factors such as living costs and location. We don't consider salary history.
