Job Description
The chief responsibility of the data engineering manager is to collaborate with the data engineering team in driving the design, construction, launch of new data models and data pipelines using contemporary data engineering standards, design patterns and practices. Their objective is to create efficient teams driving delivery, introducing new data and enhancing data quality for reliable data that is easily accessible, comprehensible, and capable of providing value. The position calls for forward-thinking with an emphasis on transforming existing solutions into sustainable and scalable solutions using modern cloud data technology.
The data engineering manager will aid the adoption of modern data standards, engineering practices, devops, test-driven development, and simplification of data engineering within the company. They will collaborate with engineering teams and architects to devise solutions that meet the company's standards.
In addition, the Data Engineering Manager will be accountable for identifying/promoting new technology trends in the data engineering field to ensure the company is using them when suitable to enhance efficiency, boost business agility, reduce costs, and add value.
What Will You Be Doing?
- Collaborate with our engineering and enterprise architecture teams to define and establish data engineering principles, standards, and design patterns related to metadata management, data integration, data storage, data security, data modelling, data quality, and data access control
- Advocate for best practices and provide guidance to our Data Engineering and Data Science teams to facilitate the creation of data products that boost business value
- Work alongside the engineering and business teams to act as a proponent in promoting the use of event streams, cloud-based data solutions, Data Ownership, Data Stewardship, and self-service
- Assist with the migration of over 1000 integrations and data pipelines from various on-site technologies to cloud-based integration tools and technology
- Work closely with the project portfolio management team and technology stakeholders on integrations solutions design ensuring data engineering standards and practices build scalable and flexible solutions
- Collaborate with the infrastructure and security teams on data engineering, solutions design, centralized logging/monitoring, and transformation efforts to ensure sufficient scope, resources and costs allocated for requirements
- Act as a proponent in promoting and adopting modern data engineering standards and practices across IT
- Ensure that all application development initiatives are effectively managed and delivered to meet expectations on functionality, timeliness, and cost.
- Lead and/or participate in technical user groups, task forces, and committees
What Do You Need To Bring?
- Able to manage a team through significant/complex data transformation to event driven architecture (Kafka) and modern cloud data architecture (Azure, Databricks, Snowflake, Power BI)
- Provide leadership and management to develop high-performing teams and continuously upskill team members to keep them current through professional development programs
- Ability to prioritize personal and team responsibilities to meet organizational objectives
- Drive the cultural changes necessary to enable a continuous delivery model, modern data engineering standards, and foster a strong focus on automation and agile delivery methods.
- Willingness to learn new things and adapt quickly to a team and enterprise undergoing positive transformation
- High interpersonal skills to operate in a large, distributed, and diverse global technology team
- Success working as a technical leader in a large enterprise organization
- Sets team goals to ensure the success of the department in accordance with milestones developed by IT Senior Management
- Develop and retain high caliber data engineering talent
- Ability to foster a culture of transparency and a sense of purpose among the team and establish clear accountabilities and metrics.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field and 10-15 years' experience in various roles of technical leadership within a large-scale organization

- Successfully led data engineering and delivery of complex business technology solutions into production that have achieved or surpassed business goals.
- Experience with modern data engineering development and design concepts; software development lifecycle; project management; advanced and systems administration practices and principles; planning, design, and problem resolution
- Experience with management and supervisory practices leading people; human resource practices
- Experience in leading a data engineering team in delivering quality software solutions leveraging Azure cloud, Databricks, Snowflake, Power BI, API/micro services, and Kafka event driven technologies.
- Demonstrated ability in developing a culture that embraces innovation, and challenges existing paradigms.
