The Vattenfall Business Area Wind is in charge of all offshore and onshore wind projects (development, construction, and execution), managing all wind farms (offshore and onshore) within the Continental/UK region. Additionally, the Business Unit is responsible for identifying lucrative growth opportunities for any other type of renewable energy sources and developing solutions for system integration of renewable energy sources.

Job Description

We are seeking an ideal candidate to fill the position of Data Scientist, to enhance the analytics team working for off- and on-shore wind. The team, a part of the Digital Engineering department, primarily works on wind farms during their operational phase. Their key areas of focus are:

  • They develop and maintain (logic and machine learned) models that support the operations of the turbines, such as failure detection & prediction, performance monitoring, stock optimization scenario simulation, and production forecasting.
  • They provide support for complex, data-centric, ad-hoc analyses on any topic where the business can present open questions. This, for example, can be an investigation into how a specific failure developed on a turbine, determining if other assets have the same problem, and quantifying the impact of certain events.

 

The Analytics Team currently works with:

  • Python (including common data science packages)
  • Statistical methods, machine and deep learning models, and optimization through simulation
  • Agile (mainly scrum) principles
  • Azure DevOps and Azure Machine Learning
  • Docker containers, running on a provided platform/cluster
  • Data on platforms like Azure SQL and Blob storage
  • Hybrid workplace (members located in Amsterdam, Hamburg, and Kolding)

Qualifications

Main tasks & responsibilities:

Being part of the Wind Analytics Team, you are facilitating data-driven business-decision-making by developing analytical models. Your primary role will be to support the development, deployment, and maintenance of analytical and machine learning models. Besides this, you will also assist in advancing the team’s capabilities and processes. More specifically:

  • You will develop, deploy, and maintain models using machine learning, statistical and other engineering approaches.
  • You will work on data analysis tasks to answer a variety of open and complex questions from across the business.
  • You will effectively work with vast volumes of data measured by the many sensors in our wind turbines.
  • You will have close collaborations with key stakeholders:
    • Data Engineering and IT to gain efficient data- and system-access.
    • Operations, ensuring models and analyses are user-centered and the outcomes are usable and actioned upon.
    • Engineers to ensure the best utilization of the domain knowledge.
  • Ideally, you will uncover the underlying business needs and identify long-term solutions for our stakeholders.
  • You have a desire to learn and collaborate with colleagues, sharing insights and knowledge to enhance the team's collective way of working.

 

Your Profile as a Data Scientist includes:

  • You have a Master or PhD degree in a field such as Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Econometrics.
  • You have experience and feel comfortable working with Python, and are motivated to master good programming practices (knowledge of other programming languages is an advantage).
  • You have demonstrable experience in developing and deploying machine learning models.
  • You have experience with SQL (exposure to other data solutions is a bonus)
  • You enjoy working in multi-disciplinary teams and have the ability to explain technical solutions to people outside your area of expertise.
  • You can transform loosely defined requirements into solid solutions by actively seeking direction from stakeholders and technical experts.
  • You tackle complex problems by breaking them into smaller, more manageable parts.
  • Experience in the wind or energy sector is beneficial.
  • You have a command of English in both verbal and written form.

 

Locations

This position can be based in one of our offices in Amsterdam, Hamburg, or Kolding. Some travel may be required.
