The Role

Accurate sustainability impact measurement throughout the value chain is essential to reducing the human footprint on the planet. Watershed is developing a leading software solution for financial institutions to measure their financed greenhouse gas emissions to discover pathways for reduction. We are building a team of scientists to implement our end-to-end measurement and sustainability analytics platform for our customers.

We seek an individual to lead the data science strategy for the Watershed Finance team and collaborate with other functional leaders to shape the product, go-to-market, and service strategies. You'll work with world-class scientists, software engineers, and product designers to build a premier platform for measuring and evaluating sustainability impacts for the climate programs of leading financial institutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute the data science roadmap for Watershed Finance by combining customer needs, government and industry guidance, and business strategy.
  • Partner with and advise pioneering customers as we co-develop innovative products that transform Watershed’s climate intelligence into market-leading investment intelligence.
  • Expand the impact of climate data science within financial institutions by researching and developing methods to solve problems like forecasting portfolio emissions trajectories, modeling decarbonization pathways, and measuring progress against targets.
  • Build and enhance emissions estimation models compatible with various types and granularities of investment data, including private equity, private credit, insurers, and more.
  • Identify and incorporate external data sets to enrich and expand Watershed’s offerings, including financial data, emissions reports, and decarbonization commitments.
  • Utilize Watershed’s tools to develop, test, and deploy models.

Your Profile

You might be a great fit if you:

  • Have 4+ years of experience as a data scientist; environmental impact modeling experience is a plus.
  • Are fluent in a scientific programming language like Python, preferably in a production environment.
  • Are an excellent communicator, capable of conveying complex topics to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Thrive in high-volume environments, with systematic organization to drive efficiency and meticulous attention to detail to ensure accuracy.
  • Are willing to work with unstructured and inconsistent data and have good intuition for how numbers map to the real world.
  • Are passionate about solving sustainability challenges and excited to contribute to this mission at a fast-paced startup, learning quickly and operating well in ambiguity.

Compensation

At Watershed, we strive for consistent, fair, and competitive compensation programs. The total cash compensation range may be inclusive of several levels at Watershed, and the final offer will be determined by various factors, including the candidate’s skills, capabilities, location, and scope of the role.

The anticipated cash compensation range is $174,000—$259,000 USD. This is in addition to a total rewards benefits package that includes equity, health/dental/vision insurance, 401(k), unlimited paid time off, paid parental leave, fertility, and mental health programs, etc.
