RAND Corporation is actively seeking experienced Data Scientists to join our multidisciplinary teams working on a variety of research topics across health care, education, labor, social and economic wellbeing, national security, and military manpower. This role is integral to supporting in-depth research and analysis using complex data sets, particularly health claims data.

Key Responsibilities

As a Data Scientist at RAND, you will:

  • Collaborate with research staff to manage and analyze large and complex data sets.
  • Apply programming and analytic skills within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Gain a deep understanding of the research topic and thoroughly acquaint yourself with the involved data.

Basic Qualifications

Candidates should have:

  • Proficiency in using SAS for data management and statistical analysis.
  • Experience with SQL including PROC SQL.
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities and a solid understanding of statistical methods.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • A detail-oriented approach to producing careful work.
  • The ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with programming in R or Python is preferred.
  • Prior exposure to working with longitudinal surveys.
  • Experience in research settings is strongly preferred.

Education

A minimum of a BS/BA in statistics, biostatistics, or a related quantitative field is required. An MS/MA in these fields is preferred.

Experience

Applicants should have:

  • At least one year of experience working with healthcare claims data from Medicare, Medicaid, or private-sector sources like Marketscan.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in statistical programming with SAS.
  • Experience working in remote enclaves such as the VRDC, NBER, IDR.

Security Clearance

U.S. citizenship may be necessary for roles requiring a U.S. government security clearance.

Location

This is a hybrid role based in one of the following locations: Santa Monica, CA; Washington, D.C.; Pittsburgh, PA; or Boston, MA.

Salary Range

Position and salary levels are determined by education and experience:

  • Level II: $85,700 - $127,500
  • Level III: $100,100 - $152,400
  • Level IV: $117,700 - $179,700

RAND considers multiple factors in offer formulations. The salary range includes base pay plus addition through RAND’s sabbatic pay policy. Benefits include health insurance, life and disability insurance, a savings plan, paid time-off, and more.
