Are you a tech enthusiast? Interested in energy and climate action? Join Kayrros, a tech scale-up that leverages artificial intelligence and satellite imaging to combat climate change and revolutionize the world's largest industries.

Kayrros is a pioneering environmental intelligence firm at the forefront of climate action. We utilize AI, satellite imaging, geolocation data, and other information sources to fulfil three primary objectives: decreasing greenhouse gas emissions; safeguarding people, assets, and ecosystems from climate hazards such as flooding and wildfires; and facilitating and accelerating the shift to sustainable energy.

Our team of specialists and tech wizards is committed to providing near-realtime transparency to energy and environment sectors, ranging from crude oil inventories and solar energy to methane emissions, wildfire risks, and reforestation initiatives. Over six years, the Kayrros team has expanded to 150 experts in data science, mathematics, and energy, boasting over 20 nationalities and 10 spoken languages. The team operates from six offices across three continents: our Paris headquarters, New York, Houston, London, Singapore, and Bangalore. Our ~100+ clients include a diverse set of stakeholders from government regulators and policymakers, international organizations, energy companies, asset managers, insurance companies, lending banks, trading companies to civil society.

In recent months, Kayrros has been recognized as a member of French Tech 2030, honored by TIME magazine as one of the TIME100 Most Influential Companies in the world, by the Financial Times as a Tech Champion, and hailed by Fast Company as one of the five Most Innovative Companies in energy and environment. Kayrros is the primary data supplier to the UN Environmental Program's International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) and was acknowledged in the latest UNEP Global Methane Assessment report.

Kayrros is growing its team of talented individuals committed to causing positive disruption in the world's largest industries and shaping the future of energy and environment.

Join us to make a difference!

We are currently hiring for our Paris office, a Junior Data Scientist - male/female (6 months internship)

The team you will be joining: the Methane & Biomass Product teams

The Methane team is engaged in detecting methane emissions, a greenhouse gas 80 times more potent than CO2 over the first twenty years, assisting esteemed international institutions like the UNEP-IMEO (). Kayrros utilizes data from multiple satellite sources to identify abnormal methane concentrations in the atmosphere, measure the flow rate, and pinpoint the emission source.

The Biomass team aids regulators, investors, and forest managers in gaining insights into global forest dynamics. Leveraging Kayrros' satellite processing capabilities, the Biomass team designs extensive solutions for tasks such as biomass estimation, species recognition, deforestation quantification, and disturbances detection.

Role:

Data scientists hold pivotal roles at Kayrros, working on R&D discovery topics and specific customer projects. They primarily develop models using a variety of methods gleaned from recent scientific papers, including computer vision, machine and deep learning, and signal processing. They collaborate with data engineers to construct robust pipelines and work closely with data analysts to analyze and interpret their model results.

They are faced with two main challenges:

  • The diversity and complexity of available data. Kayrros possesses robust expertise in remote sensing and has worked with data from numerous sensors (multispectral, hyperspectral, SAR, LIDAR, geostationary). Understanding the nuances of each technology and selecting the most suitable for a particular problem is therefore a critical phase.
  • The variability of problems. The Methane team, on one side, concentrates on detecting methane leaks and designing physical models to quantify these events. In contrast, the Biomass team focuses on forest and ecosystem dynamics to offer a granular estimation of key metrics (tree height/count, deforestation rate, species diversity), using the latest academic research and field measurements to better comprehend the driver of change.

As a data scientist, your responsibilities will include:

  • Problem formulation considering available data and project constraints.
  • Exploring and reviewing existing approaches or pertinent scientific literature.
  • Algorithm design, implementation, and testing.
  • Continually contributing ideas to enhance products and participating in all team discussions.
  • Cultivating a culture centered around remote sensing data.
