Lead Data Scientist – Gas & Power Trading

Main Purpose:

We are seeking an experienced Data Scientist to lead the development and management of market intelligence, decision support, and optimization analytics in our Gas and Power Trading businesses. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with traders, research analysts, and technologists to create and manage analytical tools aimed at enhancing decision-making processes on the trading desks. These tools will leverage computational statistics, machine learning, operations research, and classical AI optimization methods. The primary goal is to boost the profitability and efficiency of our trading operations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities are essential for this role:

• Proven experience as a Data Scientist, Quant, Research Analyst, or Trader in the commodities industry.
• A Master’s or PhD in Applied Mathematics/Statistics, Computer Science, Operations Research, Mathematical Finance, or a related field.
• Exceptional Python and SQL skills.
• Hands-on experience in developing and deploying machine learning and statistical models in a business environment.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with commercial stakeholders.

The following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities are desirable:

• Experience in developing and deploying optimization applications in a business context (e.g., linear programming, vehicle routing).
• Data engineering skills, such as ETL pipeline development.
• AWS experience and certifications.
• Experience with Tableau, Streamlit, or Django.

Department Overview

The Data Science and Engineering team is tasked with researching, developing, and providing advanced analytics and data services to the trading business at Trafigura. Our team comprises Data Scientists, Data Analysts, and Data Engineers. We are a commercially driven, front-office aligned team working closely with trading desks, global research, and enterprise technology teams.

Key Relationships

• Report to the Chief Data Scientist (Geneva).
• Collaborate closely with the global Gas and Power trading business heads.
• Work closely with global heads of research.
• Coordinate with other data scientists, data engineers, and platform engineers within our Data Science and Engineering Team.
