Job Summary
GKN is spearheading multi-million-pound development programs aimed at achieving zero-emission flight for new aircraft initiatives. Our vision involves the full electrification of aircraft powered by Liquid Hydrogen, Fuel Cells, and Cryogenically cooled networks and motors. We have built a formidable international team of over 70 engineers specializing in Liquid Hydrogen propulsion systems. Position:
Principal Research Engineer – Cryogenic Systems Design
We are recruiting a Principal Research Engineer focused on Cryogenic Systems Design. You will develop models and engineering drawings for cryogenic systems ready for manufacturing, supervise the procurement, manufacture, and assembly of cryogenic components for aircraft and ground-based facilities. This role requires on-site presence in Bristol for at least three days a week.
Job Responsibilities
- Create models of cryogenic and vacuum systems from engineering information, including line-ups, sketches, sizing calculations, and written descriptions.
- Contribute to engineering analysis and validation.
- Generate engineering drawings from cryogenic system models.
- Select and implement appropriate manufacturing and assembly techniques and methods for cryogenic and vacuum assemblies.
- Develop and define process instructions for system assembly.
- Identify, select, and audit suppliers for cryogenic and vacuum systems, ensuring that designs can be realized within the supply chain.
- Source and select materials and components, contributing to material specification generation where necessary.
- Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to develop cost-effective designs.
- Engage in internal and external reviews and workshops to influence and ensure compliance with standards and regulations.
Job Qualifications
Essential:
- HNC/HND, degree, or equivalent qualification in an engineering subject.
- Experience in designing cryogenic and high vacuum systems.
- Knowledge of leak tightness and leak detection principles specific to cryogenic and high vacuum systems.
- Understanding of the behavior and suitability of materials at cryogenic temperatures.
- Proficiency in good design practices, including manufacturing and joining techniques for cryogenic systems, and cleanliness requirements.
Desirable:
- Experience with hydrogen systems or high/ultra-high vacuum systems.
- Capability in selecting and specifying equipment for cryogenic or high vacuum system manufacture.
- Experience developing test rigs for engineering validation, including working with test houses.
- Expertise in manufacturing tool design for cryogenic systems or equipment.
- Experience detailing instrumentation schemes and wiring for test and commissioning measurements.
