Exciting Research Associate Opportunity in Machine Learning and Machine Vision at Heriot-Watt University

Contract: Full-time (35 hours per week), Fixed-Term for 9 months

Project Overview

The selected candidate will contribute to two critically acclaimed EPSRC funded projects: EP/V051164/1/1 "Developing Machine Learning-empowered Responsive Manufacture of Industrial Laser Systems" and EP/Y017307/1 "Autonomous and Intelligent Laparoscopy Trainer with Real-Time Feedback". These roles are stationed at the advanced multi-million-pound National Robotarium facility, which is a beacon of research and industry collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

The appointee will:

  • Develop innovative machine learning algorithms to enhance automation in laser alignment and the assembly of industrial laser systems.
  • Implement machine intelligence to enhance real-time training feedback in laparoscopic procedures.
  • Disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed journals, conferences, and other relevant platforms.
  • Engage in grant proposal writing and collaborative project planning.
  • Work closely with students and other researchers, providing guidance and support in related research activities.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Candidates must hold a PhD in a relevant field such as Machine Intelligence or Machine Vision, and demonstrate extensive expertise in:

  • Machine learning and machine vision techniques.
  • Experimental research methodologies.
  • Software development including embedded systems related to robotics or mechatronics.
Excellent communication skills and a proven publication record are essential for this role.

Desirable Experience

Experience in robotics, medical robotics, video processing, and deep learning will be advantageous. A track record of leading scientific publications and experience in public scientific presentations is preferable.
