Senior Data Scientist - Process Modeling
Location: Framingham, MA
About the Job
The Senior Data Scientist - Process Modeling will be an integral part of the Global CMC Development group in Research & Development (R&D). This role focuses on providing advanced analytics and process modeling support for biological process development, particularly in downstream unit operations.
With formal training as a process engineer or process systems engineer, and specialization in process modeling, you will bring demonstrated skills in mechanistic and hybrid modeling methodologies to support process design, optimization, and control activities for biopharmaceuticals. Familiarity with machine learning and data-driven modeling methodologies is also essential to support these applications.
We are an innovative global healthcare company dedicated to chasing the miracles of science to improve people's lives. At Sanofi, you will have countless opportunities to explore, grow your career, and make meaningful connections with people. Ready to make an impact?
Main Responsibilities
- Develop and deploy mechanistic, hybrid, and data-driven modeling solutions as part of matrix project teams to support downstream process development activities for a wide range of biopharmaceuticals.
- Use programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, and R to translate complex mathematical models into clean and reusable codes for model use and implementation.
- Design and analyze targeted experiments with the process development group and the Data Science team to calibrate and verify model performance.
- Act as a change agent to support the implementation of process modeling in established process development workflows for targeted downstream unit operations.
- Document progress against deliverables with rigorous scientific communication via technical presentations, reports, and, when appropriate, scientific publications.
- Maintain a communication plan with key stakeholders and partners across departments, tracking progress against deliverables.
This position requires domain knowledge in biologics downstream process development and manufacturing, such as affinity and ion exchange chromatography, filtration, etc.
This is an exciting opportunity to showcase the benefits of process modeling and data science in a cutting-edge scientific department developing the next generation of Sanofi medicines that will improve patients' quality of life worldwide.
About You
- Process systems engineer/modeler with a Ph.D. in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering and a minimum of 5 years of industrial experience, or an MSc with 9 years of industrial experience.
- Proven track record of developing process models for downstream unit operations for biologics, such as affinity/ion exchange chromatography, and ultra/nano/tangential flow filtration for process design, scale-up, scale-down, and/or process control purposes.
- Demonstrated ability to translate mathematical models into computer programs using programming languages such as MATLAB, R, Python, or similar.
- Domain knowledge in Biology with industrial or academic experience in downstream process development and/or manufacturing.
- Excellent communication skills in an international environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge and application of Machine Learning and Multivariate analysis methodologies to biological processes.
- Knowledge and experience with process simulation software like gPROMS, DSPX, and integrated systems modeling applications, such as flowsheet modeling.
- Experience in continuous bioprocess manufacturing with associated Model Predictive Control (MPC).
- Solid track record of publications in the field of process modeling and process simulation in peer-reviewed journals.
