What's the role?

Etsy is recruiting a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to join the Ads ML advertising team. Our group creates unique machine-learning models that propel product vision and customer influence. We seek individuals who are product and delivery-oriented and are excited about making ML advancements in digital advertising to aid in enhancing the Etsy buyer/seller experience.

Here are some of the problems we're addressing:

• How can we guarantee the correct ads are shown to the appropriate buyers?
• How can we aid our sellers in setting bids to achieve the maximum return rate?
• How do we sustain a pipeline that scales to our 90+ million buyers and sellers?
• How can we identify malicious actors in our system to safeguard sellers?
• How can we assist our sellers in budget allocation?

As a Staff Machine Learning Engineer, you'll be accountable for developing user-centered ML systems for a two-sided marketplace with over 90 million buyers, more than 6 million sellers, and hundreds of millions of distinct, handmade, vintage listings. Etsy sellers use Etsy advertisements to promote their products and grow their business. Do you enjoy optimizing sellers' budgets to market their listings in the best performing places on Etsy? Our Ads team's work involves constructing machine learning systems we use for ad relevance, bidding, budget pacing, and dynamic ad experiences on Etsy.com and the Etsy app. You can learn more about one of our recent projects on our Engineering blog.

This is a full-time position that reports to the Engineering Manager for Ads. In addition to salary, you'll be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, as well as our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy. This role requires your presence at Etsy's Mexico City office in a physical or flexible capacity. Candidates living within commuting distance of the Mexico City Hub may be considered first. What does the typical day look like?

• Cross-functionally work with product engineering teams and communicate your ideas and model capabilities to product managers
• Apply the newest deep learning and machine learning advances to enhance buyer and seller experiences on Etsy
• Prototype, optimize, and put into production large-scale ML models that help deliver key results
• Conduct A/B testing to validate the effectiveness of ML models and pipelines
• Work closely with product managers, ML engineers, full-stack engineers, and designers on product teams to deliver content to tens of millions of users

Qualifications

Qualities that will help you excel in this role:

• You have a proven track record of applying machine learning techniques to real-world problems.
• You are an expert in one of the following fields: natural language processing, image processing, reinforcement learning, deep learning.
• You have extensive experience training, deploying, monitoring, debugging, and iterating on production machine learning systems.
• You have a proven ability to apply statistical techniques to solve real issues.
• You can successfully create requirements and lead your team from design to delivery.
• You write understandable, testable code with an eye towards maintainability.
• You care about the implications of your work on end users.
