About the Role

The Traffic Lights and X-Object Understanding team at Cruise is looking for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer II, Perception to enhance how our vehicles interpret and react to the urban environment. This role involves crafting machine learning models that improve recognition and interaction with various urban stimuli, particularly focusing on Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) and traffic control mechanisms.

What You'll Do:

As part of the team, you'll be exploring innovative machine learning algorithms, optimizing model performance for on-road deployment, and conducting hardware-sensitive studies to aid sensor development. Your efforts will ensure that our self-driving technology meets high safety standards and functions seamlessly in urban settings.

Required Skills:

  • Strong foundation in computer vision and ML model development and training.
  • Ability to perform data analysis and retrain perception models independently.
  • Experience with ML frameworks like Tensorflow, PyTorch, and familiarity with Python or C++.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving in both hardware and software domains.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Machine Learning or Computer Science.
  • Professional experience with computational cameras and sensor-driven ML projects.
  • 4+ years of related industry experience, ideally with ROS, OpenCV, or similar tools.
