Job Summary
GKN Aerospace is looking for a highly skilled Senior Electromagnetic Design Engineer experienced in electric propulsion design to join our forward-thinking team. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of aviation by designing, developing, prototyping, and testing high-power, high-performance electrical machines and drive systems for aircraft propulsion. Your expertise will be key in advancing a major technology project focused on greener aviation and environmental protection.
The role requires a presence in the office at least three days a week to collaborate effectively with the team.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the electromagnetic design and analysis of electric machines from requirements through concept, detailed analysis, testing, and verification.
- Conduct engineering analysis and first principle calculations to support your designs or validate peers’ results.
- Select electrical machine types, topologies, and sizing to meet high-level requirements.
- Engage in technical discussions with customers during the RFI phase and program development, along with other business activities.
- Support hands-on development activities for electromagnetic materials and novel design solutions in the workshop.
- Collaborate with suppliers and partners to design and develop electric propulsion systems.
- Drive capability development in electromagnetic simulation and support testing activities for end-to-end verification.
- Identify and pursue opportunities for technical innovation and IP development, including publications and conferences.
- Generate technical reports and presentations to support reviews and TRL gates.
- Plan technical work robustly in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
Requirements and Qualifications
Essential:
- Experience in the electromagnetic design of electric machines.
- Proficiency in using electromagnetic and thermal modeling simulation tools (e.g., Comsol, Simcenter, ANSYS Maxwell, and MotorCAD).
- Strong understanding of engineering principles for electromagnetic design and the ability to generate first principles calculations.
- Good understanding of motor control and power electronics principles as they apply to the design of electrical machines.
- Knowledge of materials and their properties relevant to electric machine design and analysis.
- Experience with FMEAs and safety-critical engineering practices.
- Design experience of high-performance electric machines, such as PMSM, IM, SynR, for traction/propulsion applications.
Desirable:
- Experience in designing and analyzing electromagnetic components for cryogenic environments.
- Good understanding of the mechanical working principles of electric machines.
- Experience in vehicle electrification.
- Familiarity with system engineering standards for complex system development.
- Simulation experience of vibration, failure conditions, fault tolerance analysis, and NVH for electric machines.
