The Opportunity

Join CSIRO's space and astronomy research team to help humanity better understand the Earth and Universe. Our Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) is the largest single astronomy institution in Australia and conducts 90% of Australian radio astronomy research. Investigate numerous subjects, from the evolution of galaxies to searching for gravitational waves using pulsars.

As part of the Radio Space Situational Awareness (SSA) project team, you will develop software for SSA data processing from radio astronomy instruments. The radio SSA project team is implementing operational SSA modes for a selection of ATNF instruments.

Your Role as a Space Data Scientist

Your primary responsibilities will include algorithm development on a software-defined radio platform for reception, calibration, and data processing received from radio telescopes for SSA.

Your Duties Will Include:

  • Developing software in Python for array-based methods including interferometry, beamforming, and calibration
  • Applying relevant signal processing and data cleaning methods
  • Proposing and conducting experiments with array-based and single-dish radio telescopes
  • Familiarizing with radio-astronomy binary data storage formats
  • Communicating and documenting methodologies to team members
  • Designing new processes or apparatus under limited supervision, involving some innovation
  • Conducting literature reviews, investigations, and laboratory inspections including possible statistical or graphics software analysis
  • Developing, testing, and modifying new software applications
  • Managing operations within the work team’s plan and planning to meet project demands
  • Testing possible solutions for identified issues independently
  • Responding to client requests courteously and efficiently, monitoring client satisfaction
  • Other duties as required
