Job Summary

We're expanding our cloud capabilities and seeking a Staff Data Engineer - Cloud to play a crucial role in developing our data platform. You'll support analysis, GTM strategy, product management, and operations. This role demands an experienced data engineering professional with expertise across the data stack, capable of effective collaboration with teams in Sales and Engineering. Your work will directly contribute to tangible, positive business outcomes, making a significant impact on our operations.

The ideal candidate will apply best practices in software and data engineering to the data platform's ingestion, storage, and compute components. You'll shape Temporal’s data strategy and guide stakeholders on data consumption and action. This is a unique opportunity to design and build a world-class data platform from the ground up, leveraging best-in-class technologies and collaborating with talented teammates.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and design the data platform for near-term value and scalability.
  • Develop data pipelines for event-driven and batch-driven workloads.
  • Enhance existing pipelines with data quality checks.
  • Model data for OLAP purposes.
  • Evaluate and recommend data processing engines, table formats, and reverse ETL tools.
  • Take ownership of projects, facilitating working sessions with engineers and business stakeholders.
  • Create guidelines for external teams to interact with the data platform.
  • Analyze data platform costs and provide projections and recommendations.
  • Monitor and optimize performance of data ingest, processing, and querying operations.
  • Contribute to the data platform roadmap by recommending projects aligned with business needs.
  • Develop actionable dashboards and analyses to drive business behavior.
  • Train and enable stakeholders on new data products for optimal utilization.
  • Mentor junior engineers.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years of post-graduate industry experience across the data stack.
  • Experience designing and architecting a data platform for a SaaS business.
  • Ownership of key components in SLA-bearing production data platforms.
  • Proven track record in building data lake architectures.
  • Deep expertise in at least one major cloud provider (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
  • Experience with diverse data sources (APIs, logs, event stores, etc.).
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL; additional languages are a plus.
  • Experience with multiple data processing/query engines (Spark, Presto/Trino, Athena, BigQuery).
  • Expertise in object stores and relational databases like S3 and Redshift.
  • Ability to quickly learn new tools and technologies.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a focus on connecting technical projects to business impact.

Compensation

The estimated pay range for this role is $175,000 - $240,000. This role is also eligible to participate in Temporal's equity plan. Compensation ranges reflect salary and commission across various geographic markets, taking into account factors such as experience, knowledge, expertise, skillset, market location, and job level.
