As an AI Data Engineering and Data Science Manager, you will join a proactive, supportive, and independent global team focused on delivering complex AI and data systems. You will collaborate closely with various Turnitin teams to integrate AI and data science across a wide range of products, aimed at enhancing learning, teaching, and academic integrity.

 

Job Description

In your role as the AI Data Engineering and Data Science Manager, you will supervise a team responsible for all data collection and curation for the AI team. There will be a specific emphasis on automated data collection and labelling through state-of-the-art AI and LLMs. Creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving will be crucial for your success. The key responsibilities of the AI Data Engineering and Data Science Manager will include:

  • Leadership: Develop and manage a team of AI data engineers and data scientists, facilitating their growth and performance.
  • AI Data Engineering: Design, construct, operate and launch real-time data pipelines on a large scale using AI methods and best practices. Use leading data warehousing, data science and data engineering technology to fast-track Turnitin’s AI R&D efforts. Automate low-value tasks to expedite the market launch and improve the reuse of new AI initiatives.
  • Collaboration: Cooperate with AI R&D teams and the Data Platform Team to collect, create, curate and maintain high-quality AI datasets. Guarantee alignment and integration of data architecture and data models across varying products and platforms.
  • Strategic Contribution: Act as an opinion leader in AI and data science, advising Turnitin's senior leadership on leveraging AI-driven data engineering to develop future-proof data strategies and activate data to build a dual data engineering platform.
  • Hands-on Involvement: Participate in data engineering and data science tasks as needed to support the team. Lead external data collection efforts - including cutting-edge prompt engineering techniques - to help with the development of state-of-the-art AI models.
  • Innovation: Promote data innovation through research and development to uncover insights from Turnitin's abundant data resources.
  • Communication: Ensure the company's vision and mission are clear within the team and promote excellent internal communication.
  • Continuous Learning: Remain updated on new tools and development strategies, and bring innovation suggestions to leadership.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in data engineering and data science, preferably with a focus on enabling and accelerating AI R&D.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a managerial or technical leadership role, with responsibility for large cross-functional projects.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, Java and SQL.
  • Strong Proficiency with Redshift, Hadoop, Elasticsearch and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Familiarity with AI frameworks like PyTorch and TensorFlow and AI libraries such as Huggingface and Scikit-Learn.
  • Expertise in interacting with and prompting advanced Large Language Models (LLMs) and LLM APIs.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills, and the capability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Desired Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in data engineering and data science, with a specialization in AI and machine learning projects.
  • 4+ years of experience in a managerial or technical leadership role.
  • Proficiency in natural language processing (NLP) techniques and tools.
  • Experience in the education or educational technology sectors.
  • Experience in data visualization and data communication.
