Job Overview
This onsite position is based at our state-of-the-art headquarters in Milwaukee, WI.
The Automation Center of Excellence at Komatsu focuses on Research and Development of cutting-edge autonomous and situational awareness technologies for our mining equipment, including Mining Shovels, Mining Wheel Loaders, and Mining Drills. The Automation R&D Engineer will contribute to new product design in machine autonomy, encompassing technical specifications, hardware selection, integration, programming, testing, and documentation aimed at enhancing the autonomous functionality of large-scale mining equipment.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Solid understanding of the product design lifecycle, software development, maintenance, and user-friendly product design characteristics.
- Balancing between new product research, design, and the development of testing and simulation for product validation.
- Collaborate in a small team with high individual autonomy to pursue creative design ideas.
- Utilize Agile Product Development; candidates should be self-starters capable of turning concepts into technical designs focused on end-user experiences.
- A strong desire for continuous learning as the team integrates advanced and emerging technologies. Enjoy working on unfamiliar technology and be willing to explore and solve new challenges.
Qualifications/Requirements
Required Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Robotics, or Mechatronics.
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in robotics, sensors, programming, machine autonomy, and/or controls. A Master’s degree with a year of experience will also be considered.
- Formal education in programming (not necessarily a degree).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Creative, high-energy, self-motivated, and a self-starter.
- Willingness to travel up to 10% annually.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with control architecture design and programming languages (LabVIEW, Python, C++, MATLAB, and Simulink).
- Experience with Computer Vision (OpenCV, CUDA, PCL).
- Knowledge of RTI DDS Communication platform (ROS2).
- Experience with operating systems (Linux, Windows Embedded).
- Experience in systems integration involving controls programming.
- Experience with advanced sensors like RADAR, 3D LiDAR, etc.
- Experience in installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and supporting technologies or mobile machines.
- Knowledge of kinematics.
- Proficiency in Docker for software containerization and development.
- Experience in engineering documentation.
- Experience with various industrial communication protocols (RS232/422/485, TCP/IP, CANOpen, J1939, ProfiBus/ProfiNet, EtherCAT, etc.).
- Experience with UI/UX development.
- Willingness to learn and try new things.
