Job Overview
The CDC Foundation is seeking a dedicated Data Engineer to join our team. This role is integral to our mission of advancing public health by designing, building, and maintaining data infrastructure. You will work closely with the Boston Public Health Commission, IT, and Data Modernization teams to create the architecture necessary for data generation, storage, processing, and analysis.
As a Data Engineer, you will collaborate with data experts, analysts, scientists, modelers, warehouse architects, IT staff, and other organizational staff to develop and implement solutions that meet the specific needs of the public health agency. This position is fully remote for candidates based in the U.S.
Key Responsibilities
The Data Engineer will:
- Create and manage systems and pipelines for efficient data flows, including ingestion, processing, and storage.
- Collect, transform, and clean data to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Load data into storage systems, data lakes, or data warehouses.
- Optimize data pipelines and infrastructure for performance and scalability.
- Design, test, deploy, and maintain data pipelines to deliver curated data assets.
- Monitor data systems for performance issues and implement solutions.
- Implement security measures to protect sensitive information.
- Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and partners to understand data needs and ensure infrastructure supports organizational goals.
- Maintain ETL and ELT processes for data accuracy and consistency.
- Manage data storage systems including relational and NoSQL databases.
- Incorporate industry trends and emerging technologies.
- Provide technical guidance and communicate effectively with organizational partners.
Qualifications
Ideal candidates will possess:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of five years of experience in Data Warehouse and Data Lake implementations.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, Scala, and SQL.
- Experience with big data technologies like Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, and Flink.
- Strong understanding of databases including MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and Cassandra.
- Knowledge of engineering best practices, source control, automated testing, CI/CD, and peer review.
- Experience with cloud computing platforms, particularly Microsoft Azure.
- Expertise in data modeling and data integration techniques.
- Experience with ETL and ELT processes and data warehousing tools.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and excellent communication skills.
- Experience with virtual work environments.
