Join Stepan Company as a Data Engineer in Northfield, IL

Stepan Company is actively seeking a passionate and skilled Data Engineer to become a part of our innovative R&D team in Northfield, IL. Reporting to our Process Chemistry & Technology Manager, you will be instrumental in designing, implementing, and supporting data structures that are essential for our R&D community. Collaborate with scientists and analysts to build efficient data pipelines, manage intricate datasets, and develop tools that drive groundbreaking research.

Key Responsibilities

• Engineer data storage, management, and processing pipelines in multi-tenant IoT (Internet of Things) Edge environments
• Integrate relational, document, timeseries, graph, and vector database engines
• Develop data solutions that function seamlessly in cloud, on-premises, and hybrid environments
• Develop and integrate with REST/SOAP APIs and CRUD user interfaces to maintain secure data integrity from both users and machines
• Create reliable interfaces with lab and production equipment using various low-level protocols (Serial, TCP/IP, USB, Modbus, OPC, etc.)
• Collaborate effectively with scientists, modelers, and IT team members to achieve project goals
• Develop and adhere to robust data governance models

Qualifications

• Minimum 3-5 years of experience as a data engineer, software developer, or similar role
• Proficiency in Python Django, Git, SQL (Postgres or Oracle)
• Experience with cloud services (Azure, AWS, etc.)
• Understanding of modern data architecture patterns and ability to guide system design
• Capability to drive progress independently and collaboratively as needed
• Skill in tailoring detailed or technical communications for diverse audiences

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
