Data Scientist, ESG Analytics - Join Scotiabank

We are currently seeking a talented Data Scientist in ESG Analytics to solve complex ESG problems using advanced analytical, statistical, predictive, and data visualization techniques.

About the Role

The primary responsibility of this role is the calculation of investment emissions to support the Bank's net-zero commitment. The Data Scientist will collaborate with the Director of ESG Data & Analytics and various internal stakeholders to transform client-level data into actionable insights for optimal business decisions across different areas of the Bank. You must possess strong problem-solving skills and programming knowledge to draw relevant insights from multiple data sources quickly.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct data analysis to provide actionable insights for decision-makers, focusing on investment emissions analytical calculations to help the Bank meet its emission reduction targets (Scope 3 emissions, category 15).
  • Present insights and rationales in an easy-to-understand format for business or senior management, including data visualization techniques and dashboards.
  • Develop innovative approaches and apply statistical and predictive modeling techniques to solve analytics problems, communicating results and methodologies to business clients and senior analytics team members.
  • Stay updated on trends in financed and facilitated emissions standards (PCAF, GHG), data science, and data products, translating these trends into actionable objectives for the company.
  • Promote a culture of curiosity and innovation through presentations, demonstrations, and leading by example.

Skills and Experience

  • Experience with a wide range of analytical activities, conducting unbiased, client-focused analytics.
  • Ability to ensure results support client acquisition/retention and business line growth and profitability.
  • Strong knowledge of the Bank’s products and services.
  • Solid analytical and data wrangling skills, comfortable working with large amounts of data and translating it into clear insights.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Python, with a strong understanding of data manipulation libraries and statistical packages.
  • Experience using query languages such as SQL, HiveQL, and big data technologies like Spark.
  • Knowledge of automated ETL processes and data pipelines (e.g., Airflow).
  • Experienced in MLOps best practices and proficient in git technologies.
  • Prior experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP) is preferred.
  • Proficient in machine learning algorithms and visualization tools such as Power BI.
  • Experience in investment emissions (Scope 3 emissions, category 15) calculations and standards is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Bank Information Systems, including finance systems, Salesforce, and the Enterprise Data Lake, is an asset.
  • University education in Economics, Statistics, Computer Science, or Engineering. Master's level preferred.
