About the Role

The Marketplace Dynamics data science group tackles both foundational and applied problems at the heart of Instacart’s marketplace and fulfillment operations. Data scientists in this group work across Logistics, Shopper Pay & Incentives, and Marketplace Coordination teams. They address analytical, experimental, and inferential challenges to understand and expand the capabilities of a sustainable, balanced multi-sided marketplace. Collaborating closely with Machine Learning and Operations Research Engineers, Product Managers, and policy partners, they iterate on marketplace systems, develop new products, and enhance experimentation capabilities.

About the Job

  • Own analytical frameworks guiding the product roadmap
  • Design rigorous experiments and interpret results for actionable conclusions
  • Develop statistical models to extract trends, measure results, and predict future performance
  • Build simulations and model scenarios projecting the impact of product and policy interventions
  • Enhance algorithms and models underpinning marketplace fulfillment systems
  • Support strategic decisions with advanced analytical and experimentation tools
  • Apply expertise in causal inference, machine learning, complex systems modeling, economics, operations research, and geospatial analysis
  • Present findings to influence leadership decisions
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams

About You

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in a quantitative role at a product company or research organization
  • Proficient in designing and executing rigorous experiments with scientifically sound recommendations
  • Expert in writing complex, efficient, and eloquent SQL queries
  • Skilled in coding with Python or R
  • Passionate about converting unstructured quantitative problems into business solutions
  • Ability to translate business needs into analytical frameworks
  • Adaptable, eager to learn, and capable of thriving in a dynamic environment with a growth mindset

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in multi-sided marketplace challenges
  • Proficiency in building, evaluating, and improving statistical, machine learning, and optimization models
  • Experience working with geospatial data and methods
  • Expertise in product-driven experimentation and tool development
  • Excellent communication skills for leading initiatives and presenting findings
  • Advanced degrees (MS/PhD) in Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, or related fields

Instacart offers competitive compensation and benefits. This role is remote, with the base pay range depending on the candidate's permanent location. This role is eligible for a new hire equity grant and annual refresh grants. For US-based candidates, base pay ranges are as follows:

  • CA, NY, CT, NJ: $162,000—$180,000 USD
