About the Role & Team

We are seeking a Mid-Level Data Scientist to join our dynamic Data team. At Penn, the Data Science team plays a crucial role in developing models, forecasts, and simulations to enhance theScore Bet, ESPN Bet, and iCasino products. As part of this innovative team, you'll contribute to building end-to-end sports data products that aim to deliver a world-class, data-driven product experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Machine Learning & Statistical Modeling: Predict the likelihood and outcomes of various sports events.
  • AB Testing: Utilize data to refine product features.
  • Predictive & Prescriptive Analytics: Deliver deep insights into feature performance and forecasts.
  • Model Development: Collaborate with data and infrastructure engineers to deploy models and build data pipelines.
  • Best Practices: Develop internal data processes for model building, improved latency, and readability.
  • New Predictive Models: Design and build new models with enterprise-level impact, from event-level outcomes to game state simulations.
  • Inter-team Collaboration: Work closely with the Data Science and Engineering teams to solve problems and share techniques.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Deploy modeling deliverables in coordination with team leaders and stakeholders in Product and Trading.
  • Iterative Improvement: Analyze results using robust statistical methods to continually enhance data products.
  • Documentation: Write and maintain technical design and documentation on Git/confluence.
  • Other duties as required.

About You

  • Experience solving quantitative problems with MLB, NBA, or NFL data.
  • Profound understanding of sport-specific problem-solving techniques.
  • Ability to project various aspects of player and team performance dynamically.
  • Proficiency in developing game simulations that mimic real sports dynamics.
  • Expertise in Python and SQL for generating meaningful insights.
  • Experience creating algorithms and applying machine learning models to sports data.
  • Capable of collaboratively iterating on data science products.
  • Knowledge of classification, regression, forecasting models, and A/B testing.
  • Experience provisioning services using GitHub.
  • Ownership of work to deliver high-level objectives.

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with MLFlow.
  • Experience with AWS/GCP.
  • Experience setting up ML CI/CD pipelines, managing databases, and deploying models.
  • Knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes through Terraform, and Cloudwatch.
