Director of Engineering, Machine Learning Platform

We are recruiting a Director of Engineering to construct a new team charged with designing, establishing, and managing an ML platform to encourage AI/ML utilization across MongoDB. This new role will closely work with partners and stakeholders from Product, Engineering, Data Science, and our internal Data Platform team to design a solution that caters to both immediate and future platform and product needs, including infrastructure for data pipelines, data observability, and the full model lifecycle (training, orchestration, inference, validation). This platform will be instrumental for product features and running our global Atlas fleet.

MongoDB's Developer Data Platform offers various developer-centric services, including MongoDB Atlas Database, Atlas Search, Atlas Data Federation, Atlas Application Services, among others. This fully integrated platform allows developers to quickly and reliably deploy secure, globally distributed, and fully integrated services. The new ML platform will power real-time and mission-critical machine learning applications and large language models that support MongoDB's Developer Data Platform.

This team is like a startup within the company. This position is a chance to be a founding member of the team building MongoDB's ML platform.

This role can either be based at our New York City office or remotely within the North American region.

Responsibilities / What you'll do...

• Lead a team responsible for designing, constructing, and maintaining MongoDB's ML Platform, backing real-time data pipelines, data observability, as well as training, orchestration, and productizing of machine learning and large language models.
• Expedite the incorporation of AI/ML advancements into production code through infrastructure that can operate at scale and is resilient.
• Liaise closely with data science, product management, product engineering, infrastructure engineering, along with other internal teams, to delineate the preliminary and future evolution of the ML platform.
• Collaborate with the internal Data Platform leadership to eliminate duplication of work.
• Shape architecture, development practices, and escalation policies as the teams and platform usage expand.
• Address platform requirements to enable support engineers to swiftly detect and rectify production issues.
• Develop and maintain tools and processes that aid automated platform testing and live upgrades of platform software.
• Stay in regular touch with data science, product, and product engineering teams to understand how the platform can best serve other teams' objectives.
• Head the process, in collaboration with MongoDB recruiting, to hire the right mix of skills and expertise for the team, considering both internal and external candidates.
• Partake in code review and contribute to technical standards.
• Guide junior developers.

Qualifications / We’re looking for someone with…

• Experience in building systems that back robust, large-scale data pipelines and machine learning model training and hosting, designed for scalability, automation, and CI/CD/CT.
• An in-depth understanding of the development and operational patterns of data scientists.
• Proven success in designing, building, testing, debugging, and performance tuning of distributed and/or highly concurrent software systems.
• Ability to consider requirements and choose the correct architecture and tools to progressively build systems while tackling immediate tasks.
• Proficiency with Python.
• Experience in reviewing code from junior developers.
• Excellent verbal and written technical communication skills and eagerness to collaborate with colleagues, mentor fellow engineers and take project ownership and accountability.
