Position Overview

As the Director of Technical Data Engineering, you will lead a team of Data Engineers, providing strategic direction and hands-on expertise throughout the full development lifecycle of complex data projects. This role encompasses integrations and transformations, including analysis, design, development, and support of sophisticated data pipelines in cloud environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and execution of technology and processes in supporting the Hearst Enterprise Data Management program, adhering to existing Hearst technical policies and procedures.
  • Direct a team of data engineers in building integrations and transformations, including analysis, design, development, and support of complex data pipelines in the cloud, collaborating effectively with Business Data Teams.
  • Provide guidance in implementing a cloud-based modern data stack that meets strict security, privacy, and quality assurance standards.
  • Steer the technical strategy related to Data Domains, Data Quality, Metadata, and Master Data, including the associated technical stack.
  • Lead the implementation and enhancement of a cloud-based data platform comprising authoritative, high-quality Hearst shared data.
  • Offer technical direction on data governance and stewardship strategies.
  • Support Hearst businesses in building centralized data assets that facilitate Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning for enhanced insights.
  • Collaborate with external organizations to advance the technical architecture of the data management program.
  • Oversee the monitoring and measurement of performance and success metrics for data engineering teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • 7+ years of experience in managing a team of data engineers delivering successful cloud-based data management strategies.
  • 10+ years of experience as a data engineer or in a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in implementing cloud-based data repositories with adherence to data quality, security, privacy, and governance standards.
  • Proficiency with a wide variety of cloud-based Databases, Data Warehouses, and Data Lake technologies.

Compensation and Benefits

In accordance with applicable law, Hearst provides a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role based in New York State: $170,000-$200,000. For candidates outside New York State, the salary range will align with the specific location. The final salary determination will be based on various permissible factors, including skills, experience, training, certifications, and education.
