Job Description and Qualifications

The Boeing Company is seeking a Systems Engineer with a background in data analytics and airplane performance to join our Flight Efficiency Solutions (FES) team within the Boeing Global Services (BGS) Engineering group in Seattle, WA. The FES team is dedicated to developing Flight Efficiency and Sustainability products within Boeing's Digital Aviation Solutions portfolio.

In this role, you will be responsible for developing tail-specific performance models for FliteDeck Advisor (FDA), a flight optimization application. FDA provides real-time advisories to pilots to enhance flight profiles, reduce fuel consumption, optimize flight schedules, and generate cost savings while also supporting sustainability goals by lowering carbon emissions.

We are looking for candidates who can apply advanced mathematical principles, knowledge of aerodynamics, flight dynamics, and flight operations. This role involves developing optimization models and algorithms, contributing to innovative solutions in optimization and sustainability.

Collaboration is key. You will work closely with customers and cross-functional teams to define requirements, create solutions, and deliver high-quality products. Prior experience in developing analytics and optimization solutions for airline operations, specifically flight deck operations, is highly desirable.

Additional preferred qualifications include experience in customer support, technical product management of airplane performance tools, and familiarity with commercial, business, and military airplane performance regulations. Strong problem-solving, analytical skills, and effective communication and teamwork abilities are essential. A growth mindset and passion for aviation are highly valued.

Position Responsibilities

  • Lead activities to plan, design, develop, and verify complex lifecycle balanced systems and solutions.
  • Develop and optimize tail-specific airplane performance models and algorithms.
  • Utilize analytics and machine learning techniques to analyze and optimize aircraft performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance aircraft performance and efficiency.
  • Research and recommend new system requirements to improve product capabilities.
  • Provide technical solutions to complex problems requiring ingenuity and creativity.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, competition offerings, and advancements in aircraft performance and sustainability.
  • Support global teams across different time zones to ensure seamless communication and collaboration.
  • Assist in the development of design practices.

This position is hybrid, requiring some onsite work at one of the listed locations. This is subject to the hiring team’s discretion and may change in the future.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, engineering technology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.
  • 5+ years of experience with data analysis algorithms (e.g., data mining, statistics, machine learning, natural language processing, text mining, visual analytics) and building descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive models.
  • Knowledge of aerodynamics, airplane performance, or flight operations.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and MATLAB.
  • Experience with regulatory, certifications, or standards within aviation.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)

  • For Senior Level (Level 4): 10+ years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with flight data monitoring and flight data analytics.
  • Experience in deep learning and neural network models.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and standards related to aircraft performance.
  • Knowledge of flight management systems and aircraft trajectory.
  • Experience with algorithm development/integration.
  • Experience working with airline customers.
  • Experience developing technical roadmaps and requirements.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams.
  • Familiarity with airplane avionics, network protocols, and airplane system integration.
