The Center for Analytics and Insights (CAI) at is an enterprise center of excellence for Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Advanced Analytics. We are transforming how data, analytics, and AI/ML are used to support strategic decisions and serve Vanguard’s clients.

Role Overview

The Head of Data Science & Machine Learning will lead an agile team of approximately 70 data scientists and engineers within our Personal Investor division, driving analytic innovation and AI/ML solutions. Your mission: enhance client relationships, improve client outcomes, attract new clients, and continuously improve Vanguard's products, services, sales, marketing performance, and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

As the Head of Data Science & Machine Learning, your responsibilities will include:

• Leading and mentoring the data scientist and data engineering staff within CAI.
• Developing and implementing operational plans to achieve CAI objectives in collaboration with senior management.
• Engaging with senior business unit leaders, project sponsors, and stakeholders to identify business priorities and educate them on data science applications.
• Conducting business unit projects focused on investor insights and behaviors.
• Ensuring rigorous controls throughout the data science project lifecycle to minimize risks and comply with governance requirements.
• Building, managing, and developing a high-performing team of data scientists and engineers.
• Driving creative and innovative AI/ML applications to achieve impactful results.
• Guiding business partners on interpreting and utilizing data science results to implement actionable solutions.
• Building deep expertise in Vanguard's data and identifying gaps and corrective actions in collaboration with other teams.
• Building relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including leading universities and data analytics thought leaders.

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with:

• 15+ years of experience in advanced analytics functions, with a focus on data science. Experience in the financial services industry is a plus.
• Proven track record in developing and delivering actionable AI/ML products and services.
• Expertise in applied math, statistical techniques, and machine learning methods.
• Strong computer skills, including Python and R, with familiarity with cloud-based, open-source technology platforms.
• Experience in engaging with diverse constituencies to yield powerful insights and actionable plans.
• Exceptional problem-solving skills and demonstrated success in structuring quantitative and qualitative analyses of complex issues.
• Proven ability to motivate, mentor, and develop talent, and build high-performing teams.
• Successful track record in delivering results within large, matrixed, service-oriented organizations.
• Experience in identifying and leveraging emerging technologies and trends to create innovative solutions.
