Role Overview: Director of Engineering, Renter

Reporting directly to the VP Engineering, as the Director of Engineering, you will chart the path for the Renter Pillar, the next-generation Internet Listing Service (ILS) and premier rental matchmaker for city dwellers ready to move. You will be vital in executing the product strategy for the Renter Pillar, setting an engineering vision, roadmap, and delivering top-notch renter products such as Apartmentlist.com and Sunny.com.

We seek someone with extensive expertise in spearheading engineering advancements and harnessing AI and ML innovations, complemented by a deep understanding of user experience. This role demands both a strong operator and a strategic leader who can champion our internal team and external marketplace customers.

Key Responsibilities

• Drive the strategic vision and tactical execution of the Renter Pillar
• Provide technical expertise and guidance to team planning efforts and help shape our overall product strategy
• Act as a player and coach, guiding engineers in building and extending our web application for renters
• Hire and mentor engineers, building a high-performing engineering team
• Collaborate with key stakeholders across Product, Design, Data Science, and Business Owners to build accurate estimates, plans, specs, and backlog priorities
• Guide the broader strategy of front-end systems, design language, and accessibility
• Develop a scalable system architecture that leverages machine learning techniques to enhance user experience
• Regularly communicate progress and accomplishments to the broader Apartment List community
• Improve and iterate on processes to make the team efficient and effective
• Ensure the quality of the team’s work
• Evaluate and select third-party tools, services, and libraries

Required Skills and Experience

• BA in Computer Science, Information Security, Information Systems, Engineering, or related fields recommended but not required
• 7+ years of experience in building backend/full-stack applications
• 5+ years of experience successfully managing teams of 5+ engineers
• Experience managing other managers and growing your team
• Strong experience in building and maintaining scalable backend systems, data platforms, and user-centric web applications
• A deep understanding of agile methodologies
• Proven track record of managing and iterating on team processes to keep the team focused and efficient
• Experience working directly with Product Managers, Designers, and Analysts

Compensation Details

At Apartment List, we consider various factors to determine compensation, including role, level, and work. The Canadian base salary range (in CAD) for this position is:

• Zone 1: $185,000 - $225,000 + bonus + equity
• Zone 2: $166,000 - $202,000 + bonus + equity
