Working in the Quantitative Development Team, Trading & Origination (T&O)

As a part of Trading & Origination (T&O), the Quantitative Development team is a thrilling and recently founded division with a specific mandate of pushing forward T&O’s digitization agenda. The Quantitative Development team plays a vital and fundamental role in ensuring that T&O meets its strategic targets of expanding both the proprietary trading and customer service businesses.

Job Description

We are searching for a Junior Data Scientist with strong abilities in data engineering and visualization to join our innovative and progressive Quantitative Development team. Practical knowledge of machine learning models is also required. Previous experience in energy or financial markets is desired, but not necessary.

The Quantitative Development team is a groundbreaking initiative within Statkraft to develop new core analytical and compute capabilities using the most advanced services and technology stack. In your role, you will cooperate with various proprietary trading teams to provide a competitive edge to our commercial business through data and digitization. While your primary focus will be on data engineering and visualization, you will participate in all stages of the end-to-end data science lifecycle: understanding business necessities, data gathering, model development, and deployment.

Reporting directly to the VP of Quantitative Development, you will utilize our technologies and markets intelligence to deliver solutions to our trading teams. Simultaneously, you will apply a clear enthusiasm for automation to construct and continuously evolve our overall quantitative environment.

This role will be based in Stamford, Connecticut, USA

Example responsibilities will include:

  • Building and maintaining dashboards containing key signals to be used by the proprietary trading desks
  • Understanding current data flow & architecture, and executing continuous ingestion improvements as more data requirements come through
  • Applying understanding of markets and fundamentals of machine learning models to enhance existing applications and inspire new ones
  • Contributing to and reviewing colleagues' code in the shared repositories
  • Investigating commercial tools as options for delivering solutions
  • Identifying and communicating business needs between the trading desks and the Quantitative Development team
  • Assisting with promoting and managing the Quantitative Development team’s strategic initiatives to the trading desks
  • Researching new trends and practices in energy markets and/or data science
  • Reporting progress to VP of Quantitative Development

Qualifications

  • M.S./B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics or similar field of study
  • Interest in learning about energy trading and financial markets
  • Well-versed in Python
  • Strong data engineering (e.g. pandas, PostgreSQL, Rest APIs) and visualization experience (e.g. Plotly, Dash)
  • Practical experience with machine learning packages (e.g. sckit-learn, LightGBM, XGBoost, Keras)
  • Prior exposure to version control (e.g. GitLab), CI/CD solutions (e.g. Argo Workflows, Terraform), containerized development (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes), and cloud deployment (e.g. Azure, AWS)
  • Collaboration frameworks (e.g. Jira, Confluence)
  • Strong analytical skills and commercial mindset with the ability to efficiently troubleshoot problems
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate well across different environments
  • Possesses a can-do attitude
  • Fluent in English, both spoken and written
