About the Opportunity:

The Security and Privacy Heterogeneous Environment for Reproducible Experimentation (SPHERE) is an NSF-funded mid-scale research infrastructure project. It’s a collaborative effort between USC Information Sciences Institute and Northeastern University's Khoury College of Computer Sciences. SPHERE will provide unparalleled resources for cybersecurity and privacy research, offering diverse hardware, software, and a user-configurable network substrate, all protected by specific security policies tailored to research needs.

Responsibilities:

We seek a talented Research Engineer to join our innovative SPHERE project team, specifically focusing on IoT device experimentation. Your primary objective will be to develop the world’s largest remotely-accessible IoT testbed, including various devices like smart speakers, TVs, and cameras from multiple manufacturers. This IoT testbed will allow researchers worldwide to run experiments without needing physical devices or custom-built infrastructure.

The role includes:

• Building and managing the IoT testbed.
• Developing programming interfaces for remote interaction with devices.
• Integrating secure data storage and network traffic capture tools.
• Ensuring the testbed supports scalable, repeatable experiments.

This on-site position is based at our Boston campus.

Qualifications:

Requirements:

• BS/BEng in Computer Science or a closely related field (relevant work experience can substitute this requirement).
• Proficiency in at least one programming language.
• Experience with Linux and software development tools like git.
• Self-starter with the ability to work independently and within a team.

Preferred Skills:

• Experience or interest in system/network administration, IoT, and/or cybersecurity.
