A salary of level 5 - £46,293 plus a Market Premium Payment (MPP) of £6,000 is offered.

Job Description

The UKAEA’s grading structure is under review, aimed at enhancing our capability to lead sustainable fusion energy initiatives and to maximize scientific and economic benefits globally. This pivotal time makes it an ideal opportunity to embark on a journey with us.

This role in the Computing Division encompasses working on pioneering projects within the Plasma Simulation Group. You'll apply modern computational techniques to plasma physics, engage in developing simulation capabilities, and use AI and machine learning for reactor design and more.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of new computational codes and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Pioneer research in numerical methods tailored for fusion and allied fields.
  • Develop high-performance computing (HPC) techniques and integrate AI/ML technologies for advanced reactor simulations.
  • Forge and enhance international collaborations to optimize fusion energy solutions.

Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in a computational, mathematical, or physical science discipline, or related experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of plasma physics and fusion energy.
  • Proven experience with high-level programming languages such as C++, Fortran, Julia, R, or Python.
  • Strong background in either numerical methods, HPC, scientific software engineering, or machine learning.
  • Demonstrable leadership experience in technical or project management roles.
