The Role

The School of History, Classics & Archaeology at Newcastle University is seeking an innovative researcher and educator for a position in post-1700 history. Preferred subfields include:

  • The history of race in a British or European context
  • European history, particularly revolution, ideology, empire, or war

We aim to enhance the interdisciplinarity of our unit’s research and education. The appointed candidate will have an ambitious research program, secure external research funding, publish high-quality outputs in internationally recognized venues, and utilize their research to make societal contributions. As an innovative educator, you will contribute to the development and delivery of programs in the History section, ensuring an outstanding teaching experience for our students. We emphasize engaging with the impact of the latest technological developments (AI, big data) on teaching and learning.

Key Accountabilities

Teaching & Learning

  • Provide high-quality teaching, learning, and student support
  • Mentor and support students as a personal tutor
  • Set and mark assessments in accordance with University standards, utilizing online and digitized curricula
  • Contribute to curriculum development
  • Ensure students benefit from a research-intensive, academically excellent environment
  • Provide education that engages, challenges, and supports students to fulfill their potential both during and after their studies

Research

  • Conduct internationally excellent research in post-1700 history
  • Contribute to the research profile by publishing high-quality outputs
  • Secure external funding
  • Develop research-based solutions to real-world problems, engaging with external stakeholders
  • Supervise postgraduate research (PGR) students

Other

  • Contribute to the HCA Vision, Mission, and Strategy
  • Foster a commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion, ethics, responsibility, and sustainability
  • Support the school’s global activities and development
  • Undertake administrative tasks to support teaching, research, or engagement
