Job Description

Data is vital to Shopify's mission to make commerce better for all. We manage and interpret petabytes of data to provide solutions for our merchants and stakeholders across the organization. The role of data science at Shopify is diverse with many chances to positively impact our success. 

Our Managers of data scientists will focus on influencing our strategy by defining tactics, building a reliable team, owning results, and representing Data in a multifaceted team.  We are looking for talented Machine Learning Leads/Managers to help us understand our merchants and buyers better in order to support them on their journey.

This role will head the ML Engineering team working on Search experiences in the Shop app and on Shop web. You will guide a small but efficient team of ML Engineers and collaborate with Backend Engineers, to shape the Search architecture and platform, develop and enhance the algorithms for query and product understanding, retrieval and ranking, & execute experiments to quantifiably improve user experience and add merchant value. You will be a thought leader in introducing latest Search advances to Shopify, and work to advance the state-of-the-art through demonstrated product improvements that then lead to further patenting/publication.

Qualifications

• Experience in the field of search, personalization, recommendations, and machine learning techniques 
• Experience leading teams of ML engineers on complex projects
• Commercial experience in a managerial role resolving high impact business problems
• Technical leadership - capable of system design thinking and architecture
• Experience creating an impact on business through data and machine learning products
• Experience building data pipelines and making design decisions
• Experience launching data products, iterating after release, and attempting repeatedly
• Extensive Python experience including a strong understanding of object-oriented programming (OOP) fundamentals
• Profound ability to prioritize and communicate with both technical and non-technical audiences

• It would be an advantage if you have:

• Built search-related products e.g., chatbots
• Have exposure to building data products using generative AI and LLMs
• Prior experience using Spark (either through Scala or Pyspark)
• Experience with statistical methods like regression, GLMs or experiment design and analysis, experience launching productionized machine learning systems or other advanced techniques are also desirable
