We are excited to offer a unique opportunity for an experienced Data Engineer to lead our Data Engineering team and help concept and scale our backend data infrastructure.

About the Role

You will take on the challenge of managing a team that powers data science, ETLs, self-service data, and tools crucial for efficient and scalable decision-making. This position involves defining, developing, and managing curated datasets, key business metrics, and reports across functional units at Cockroach Labs. Your leadership will also extend to mentoring and guiding a robust team of Data Engineers towards achieving their career goals.

You Will:

• Lead the design and development of our back-end data infrastructure, using the latest data engineering technologies to ensure our data platform remains reliable, scalable, and performant.
• Conceptualize and own the data architecture which includes data pipelines and centralized data warehouse to facilitate data access and empower self-service capabilities.
• Collaborate with teams across engineering, product, design, and operations to develop top-tier data applications that align with Cockroach Labs's strategic goals.
• Provide strategic and tactical insights to our Product, Sales, and Marketing teams to augment their capabilities.
• Enhance our systems to foster a modern data architecture that upholds best practices for data democracy and self-service analysis.
• Create sophisticated data tools that translate complex data queries into scalable solutions, thereby boosting operational efficiency and other critical business metrics.

Expectations for the Role

Within your first month, you’ll undergo Cockroach Labs’ comprehensive onboarding process, start engaging with stakeholders, and begin understanding our existing data architecture. Post the first 30 days, you’ll tackle executive and product management queries, update our data roadmap, and establish essential processes for this role. By the end of 90 days, you'll have fully integrated into the team, developed key processes critical for supporting Product, and initiated improvements to our data platform to enhance decision-making capabilities company-wide.

You Have:

• Over 8 years of data engineering experience, adept with languages like Python, Java, or Scala.
• Proven ability in designing and operating data collection and processing systems for large datasets.
• A minimum of 3 years managing analytics teams, with a background in modern data warehouses, scalable pipelines, and reporting/analytic frameworks.
• Deep expertise in using tools such as Spark, Airflow, Presto/Hive, Looker, and Tableau for big data processing and analytics.
• Strong knowledge in data architecture, data modeling, statistics, and infrastructure ecosystems, with excellent communication skills to liaise with cross-functional teams.

You will be reporting to Veera Ilamurugu, the Head of Data at Cockroach Labs, who is a passionate leader focused on enhancing our product data strategy and empowering business growth with data. Outside of work, Veera enjoys browsing Netflix, experimenting with new recipes, and indulging in music.

Our anticipated annual base salary range for this role is USD $185,000 - $230,000, in addition to a comprehensive benefits package.
